Ensign Family/Prairie Fires

Below is a newspaper article from the Library of Congress Historical Newspapers in the Redwood Gazette, from a column titled “Walnut Station Items”.
Fires were something farmers worried about quite often. In this article it is reported the Mr. John Ensign lost pretty much everything. John Ensign and family have been characters in some of the productions of our Walnut Grove Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant over the years.
Though we have not seen prairie fires like the settlers endured, the farmers still have fire hazards, but thanks to the local Fire Departments and fire prevention education prairie fires in Walnut Grove generally do not spread like they used to.
October is Fire Safety Month. Thank a fire fighter for his/her service this week (and every week) and donate to your local Fire Departments if you are able.
